9 Warning Signs of a Codependent Relationship

A codependent relationship is a type of dysfunctional relationship in which one person acts as a caregiver while the other takes advantage of the situation. Codependent relationships are quite frequent among those who struggle with drug abuse. Typically, one spouse will look after the other to the point of facilitating the addictive behavior of the other.

The caregiver is frequently reared in a home with an addicted parent, and she learns to appease that parent in order to make life easier for herself and her siblings. This is usually the oldest kid, and as an adult, she may repeat the cycle in her own relationships.

Codependency is harmful to both partners. It permits one spouse to fall further into addiction while driving the other to put her own wants and needs aside in order to care for the other. Our addiction counseling programs at Fort Behavioral Health can help you or someone you care about discover the fortitude to break free from a codependent relationship.
